I have been a stay at home Mum for nearly 11 years since I had my son. Since then I've had several jobs on and off that have fitted in with the children. I've worked in Sainsburys on the deli counter (evenings), data entry from home, internet researcher etc and currently work once a week on a Monday doing a market research type job in a large supermarket. I have to say though, I detest retail as I find it mind-numbingly boring and felt very much taken for granted.
I haven't worked "properly" since my daughter was born 8 years ago as she was born with a heart condition and went through a very tough time during her first two years. I never felt I could leave her with anyone, so always worked when my husband was at home, but knew none of these jobs would suit me long term.
Recently a job was advertised at my children's school, for a playworker in the after school club which will be set up next term. I let the deadline pass as my confidence is about zero after being at home for so long. I was then told by one of the management committee that if I changed my mind they would welcome a late application from me as no-one suitable had applied. Luckily my friend is a playworker in the breakfast club so she helped me with the interview questions, which my daughter (age nearly 8) tested me on!
And I got the job!
You wont envy the hours though, 3.15pm to 6.15pm Monday to Friday!
Next stop, classroom assistant!

Well done you! It's probably a bit daunting but exciting and you will love it, I'm sure.
Wishing you all the best in Brizzle!
Thanks Sandie, it feels good to be doing something different. It gives me experience of working with children and I also have to do an NVQ which I am looking forward to. Not sure my two are going to enjoy going to the club after school every day after the novelty has worn off!
Congratulations, this will put on the right path to get that classroom assistant's job! I'm sure your two will get used to it, at least they'll have Mum to themselves during the school holidays!
That's fantastic - well done you! You'll really enjoy it, I'm sure.

Congratulations, a job in a school sounds perfect so you can be off when the children are.
Mine loved going to after school club when I was working and often ask to go now as it's more fun than coming home with me!
Well done! I've worked as a playworker for about 4 years now, on and off. I'm bank staff so I don't have to do term time usually but I do get the 10 hour days in the holidays!! It's good fun, you'll love it :) x
All the best with the job, and hopefully this will be a stepping stone to bigger things for you, that work for your family. It's tough juggling family and working You must be easy on yourself. You have obviously been a great mommie, and you can do just about anything after you have done some time being a mom! The world doesnt know that, but it's true! Its the best training ground there is, and you should think of yourself as 'overly' qualified!

Hi first time reading your blog and I had to comment on your latest post as I was exactly the same ...previous to having my 3 children I had worked in retail, not really enjoying it, basically just a way to earn a living as I wasn't the academic type...I was a SAHM for 18 yrs until my youngest was 12 and was terrified going into the workplace as everything had changed so much ....I have been in the same job for 5 years now and really love it...so good luck xx
Ha just realised this post was 6/7 mths old...if you read this hope the jobs going well lol
That`s great news!
Congratulations are in order!

Good for you! Since you've been a stay-at-home mom, this sounds like a great step into the work force for you. Enjoy that check!
Apologies for being Off Topic:
Thanks for mentioning "Emmaus" in your comment on Frugal Queen's blog.
One of my old friends works for them and is always pleased to get any extra publicity.
Congratulations Tonya!
Even though I don't know you
I am very proud of you...I know what it's like to be a stay-at-home-Mum and to re-enter the work force after a long time... I hope you love your new job and that it's the start of exciting things to come! Thanks for visiting my blog. Goodluck x
just re-read your post and realize it was written in 2008! Are you still working? (that's probably why your blogging slowed down?)
Hi Kylie, I started that job but was made redundant last July as there was no demand for after school care in our school. I'm not very consistent with blogging but great at reading everyone elses lol
Wishing you and your loved ones a "Merry Christmas!"
